If you thought 2011 seemed to be the year which gave us most tablets possible, it’s time to think again. With CES being just four days away, eFun announced their latest tablet, the Nextbook Elite 10 which they will be showcasing at the show along with their other line-up of products.

The Nextbook Elite 10 features the latest version of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with a dual-core Broadcom A9 processor clocked at 1.1 GHz. The tablet has a 9.7-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 with an aspect ratio of 4:3. It also has an onboard 8GB of memory.

According to eFun’s managing director and vice-president of sales, Jason Liszewski, their new model of Nextbook series has been specifically designed for leisure, work and school, with the Elite 10 giving access to thousands applications for those purposes along with basic functionalities such as Bluetooth and cameras on both sides for video calling facility.

Some other features of the tablet includes built-in Wi-Fi for internet access and capability to upgrade OS over the air. The tab also features an HDMI port and the memory can be increased using the given MicroSD card slot. Speaking of the camera, the Elite 10 has a 5 MP rear facing and a 2 MP front facing camera for photo and video capturing.

The Tablet is preloaded with software like the Kobo eBook Store, the Android Market, OfficeSuite Viewer for accessing documents and ASTRO File Manager for managing files on the device. The eFun Nextbook Elite 10 will be available at a price point of $249.99, which is quite impressive compared to other tablets offering Android 4.0. It is expected to be on shelves by the Spring of 2012.

The world's cheapest computing device- Aakash tablet PC- will now come in an upgraded version.

Nearly a month after the Union ministry of human resource and development instructed the universities to order Aakash tablet PCs for their students, the company that manufactures the product, DataWind, has decided introduce the upgraded version of the tablet PC in January. The upgraded version will be called Aakash 2.

The new version will have better installed accessories. Its battery life will be longer and it will operate on Android 2.3. The USP of Aakash 2 however will be its SIM and phone functionality. Unlike the previous version, the upgraded version will support GPRS and phone functionality. It will also support USB devices. All this will come at just Rs 500 more than the price of Aakash 1.

The company has claimed that Aakash 1 was already sold out. Earlier, the company had said that the PC will be made available within a week of placing the order. However, the delivery of the older version has now been extended to January.

Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalay (DAVV) is yet to send its order list for Aakash to the Union HRD ministry. "We still have to send an order list to the ministry. As we have not received any updates about the upgraded version, we will send our list for the regular Aakash PC," said officiating vice chancellor of the varsity Dr Rajkamal.

The commercial version of Aakash called Ubislate 7 will also be replaced by Ubislate 7. DataWind has opened the booking for Aakash 2 or Ubislate 7 on its official website. Educational institutes will get a government subsidy of 50 per cent on every Aakash PC under the scheme of National Mission on Education through Information and Communication and Technology

A reason to rejoice for all those who missed the chance to book the much anticipated Aakash Tablet earlier!

The low-cost tablet is now available on NCarry.com, an online shopping site.

Online booking for Aakash tablet by DataWind, the manufacturer of the tab, began on December 15. However, not everyone was able to book the tab from the company's website.

In fact, about 30,000 tablets, priced at Rs. 2500 , were put online for sale but they all were sold in no time.

The seven-inch touch screen tablet features 256 megabytes of RAM, uses an ARM 11 processor with the Android 2.2 operating system, has two USB port and delivers HD-quality video.

The device was developed as part of the country's aim to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning programme.

Sony has announced that its tablets, the Tablet S and Tablet P, will receive upgrades to Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

The tech giant, however, isn't yet saying when Ice Cream Sandwich will hit its tablets, of which only the Tablet S is on sale.

The Tablet S, which features a tapered shape resembling a rolled-back magazine and a 9.4-inch touch screen, went on sale in September at a price of $500.

Sony quietly confirmed a forthcoming Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Tablet S and Tablet P devices last week through its online community forum. This is not Sony's first ICS announcement, as the company divulged plans to roll out Android 4.0 for its Sony Ericsson Xperia Phones starting in March.

We got our hands on the Sony Tablet S and were impressed by the comfortable, ergonomic design. Lead mobile analyst Sascha Segan described it as "one of the best-looking Android tablets around" with its wedge-shaped, magazine-like design.

But the media giant's tablet failed to wow us when it came to performance, features, and content offerings. Ultimately, the Sony Tablet S came up short when compared with top-selling tablets like the Apple iPad 2 and the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Currently, Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone is the only device on the market running Google's latest mobile OS, but companies like LG have been jumping on the ICS bandwagon, announcing their own plans for software updates to various devices.

Thus far, phones have been the major players in the Ice Cream Sandwich race, but tablet news is also starting to heat up. Earlier this month, Google promised an Android tablet of "the highest quality" in the next sixth months. Google made its intentions clear, targeting tablet juggernaut Apple and promising a "brutal competition" between the two companies.

Ice Cream Sandwich update announcements have been a bit of a mess for smartphone and tablet manufacturers alike. Many device makers have balked when it comes to the new OS—case in point, Samsung's announcement earlier this month that Android 4.0, when combined with the company's TouchWiz UI enhancements, proves too much for the 1GHz Cortex A8-powered Galaxy S line, which would therefore not be upgraded. Backlash from customers, however, has reportedly motivated Samsung to "investigate ways to try and make it work."
